Taunton is the Pursey stronghold. They arrived here sometime around the mid 1650s and multiplied. So much so, that it’s often difficult to know who is who.

Many certainly came in from the surrounding villages – Bradford-on-Tone, Halse, West Buckland and Pitminster to name a few. This page is the beginning of what I suspect will be a very long endeavour.

I’m starting with the tree of John Pursey and Hannah Edmonds. John married Hannah in about 1760. We can be sure about their children – Samuel, John, Lydia, Elizabeth, Hannah, Shadrach, Joseph and Anne – as Hannah left a very lengthy will (see wills section).

This tree also lists what I suspect is John’s father Joseph (m Hannah Langford) and Joseph’s father John (m Elizabeth Pordue).

The family of William and Mary Hamlin (Taunton (TSM)_Wm&Mary Hamlin) is not so well-known. I’ve put it together with a bit of educated guesswork. What I do know is that their son John Pursey married Elizabeth and had four children – Margaret, William, John and Christopher. I have surmised that this is the Christopher who died in London in about 1835.

Finally is a small but intriguing tree of Christopher Pursey Senior from Bishop’s Hull, near Taunton who died in 1723. TSM_B_Hull_Christopher

Any information about the Purseys in Taunton – especially the early ones – would be much appreciated!
