Purseys appear in Stogumber towards the end of the seventeen century. Earliest identifiable is George Pursey (m Elizabeth) born 1688. He was possibly the son of Richard and Joan Bowbire although given the reoccurrence of William and Georges in his line, could well be linked with William Purssey and Dorcas Gilbert of Taunton.

The Stogumber Purs(s)eys are amongst the wealthiest of the Pursey lines, owning land in and around Stogumber from the early 1700s through until the 1820s or so. A branch of the family became butchers, eventually moving to London and setting up as wholesale merchants in Newgate market.
