DNA

When the paper trail runs out, the only way forward is DNA and associated with this study is a Pursey DNA study on the Family Tree DNA website. The project is still in its infancy but as DNA testing becomes more known and used, we hope to have many exciting discoveries ahead of us.

Why should I take part?

Well, participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records – and which may well help you with your own family history research. Also, as more and more individuals get tested, we hope to uncover which family trees are related. Finally, as the project progresses, the results for the various family trees should provide valuable information about the evolution of the surname itself.

We encourage males to order a Y-DNA test for 37 markers, if possible as at that level the results are more dependable.

The Y DNA test tells you about your direct male line, ie your father, his father and so on. You must be male to take this test, and ideally, you should have the Pursey surname or variant thereof. (Although if you have a different surname but you believe there is a Pursey or variant in your direct male line, then do please participate.) If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree.

Once the results are in, you will, hopefully, match or be a close match to those to whom you are related. If you have hit that dreaded ‘brick wall’, this is an excellent opportunity to potentially delve a little deeper back into your origins and ancestry.

With membership recently growing, I hope Purseys, Pursseys, Perseys and others attracted to this site will think about joining.

You can learn more about the project and join here. And if you haven’t yet taken a test, do please think about it. The more members we have, the more we’ll learn.

You can learn more about DNA study research by visiting the Family Tree DNA site and at the Guild of One-Name Studies (of which I’m a member) here. Alternatively, contact me at: pursey at one-name.org
