Smithing links a number of Pursey families – especially those from the west country.
My own 3x great-grandfather John Pursey b Jun 1811, Pitminster, Somerset was a whitesmith in St James’s Street, Taunton. Subsequent censuses list him as a ‘smith’ though his 1871 death certificate lists him as a blacksmith.
Another was Charles Christopher Pursey, living in Somerset Street, Aldgate, London. Born 1783, his father Christopher (believed b 1753 Taunton, Somerset) apprenticed him to Ellick Overall, a whitesmith in Newington, Surrey on 28 March 1798. In turn Charles’s son Alfred was listed as apprentice smith in 1851.
Then there is John Pursey b about 1822 in Hemyock, Devon. He was head of the family at aged 20, living next to smith Matthew Trump.
